NALUKETTU

Nalukettu is a reminiscence of untainted Kerala Architecture in a 21st century household. Located at Guruvayoor- the pilgrim town of Thrissur, the diamond merchant family wanted a traditional home that strictly followed Vastu Shastra. Taking cases of 9 residences all over Kerala, our architects carefully studied the positions, measurements and proportions employed in the vernacular construction pertaining to astro- numerical theories. The edifice thus is a work of keen eye, building a contemporary house with pitch perfect configurations of traditional Nalukettu houses. It is a self-contained and introverted building enclosing an open to sky courtyard at its focal point. As a response to the sun, rain and humidity, steep pyramidal roofs with a 40° pitch, deep overhangs, shaded verandahs and cross ventilation are ensured. The skilful choice of timber, artful assembly and delicate carving of wood work for columns, walls and roof frames are the unique characteristics of Kerala architecture manoeuvred, using accurate fit of joints. Modern amenities like gym, home theatre and walk-in wardrobes are part of the same house where Mandapam, Poomukham and Nadumuttam lie on the approach axis.
Nalukettu is a house engaging in parallel dialogs between a modern functionality and traditional form.
