AKG Bhavan breaks away from the traditional typology of party offices, reimagining it as a fluid, community-centered public space. At its core, the design emphasizes openness, accessibility, and engagement, with spaces seamlessly flowing into one another, free from rigid thresholds.

This innovative approach fosters inclusivity while challenging the exclusivity typically associated with such buildings.

The 10 cents site is situated in Westhill, calicut, off the main national highway, a 100 m road straight heading to the site. The intend was to craft spaces out of the site and make the structure just a shelter and redefine what a building can be.

The entry, which is defined by an open threshold welcomes one to the history Musuem & gathering spaces which seamlessly flow to the interior space and then the open library and dining, with garden sitting on the other side .

The volume, framed out of a grid form, is a play of solids and voids, creating double height interaction spaces and terrace gardens making the entire building breathing and interactive.


The architectural language draws from local context, with exposed laterite stone and mud jali screens forming a bold yet minimalistic expression.

The mud jalis not only provide passive cooling and dynamic light patterns but also symbolize the transparency and adaptability of the party’s vision. The library, open to the public, and the museum narrating the party’s history serve as cultural anchors, inspiring members and the community alike.

Terraced gardens and interconnected green spaces punctuate the building, offering moments of respite and engagement. These gardens, along with a fluid spatial organization, reflect the party’s aspirations for openness and unity. Spaces like the multipurpose hall, terrace meeting areas, and reading lounges are designed to foster dialogue, learning, and connection, making the building a civic hub.

AKG Bhavan represents a new typology for institutional architecture—blurring boundaries between public and private, functionality and inspiration. It transcends its role as a party office, evolving into a space where history, community, and modern design converge. By redefining what a civic building can be, AKG Bhavan sets a bold precedent for future public-oriented architecture.
